HMI members are ready to deliver an Irish hydrogen mobility ecosystem
A briefing paper published by HMI shows how Ireland’s industrial players are ready and able to deliver the 700MW of hydrogen production and offtake required to meet 2035 EU mandates – with the correct level of support from Government.
HMI members have developed a clear roadmap to achieve these targets through the development of hydrogen production and offtake. Deployment is expected to scale up through a series of phases:
- Demonstration projects until 2026: Development of Irish hydrogen expertise and supply chains through small-scale demonstration projects
- Early Commercial projects from 2027 to 2030: Deployment of a national hydrogen refuelling network and production of the first e-fuels for maritime and aviation
- Industrialisation from 2031 onwards: Organic growth of the national hydrogen refuelling network and large-scale production of e-fuels at the Whitegate refinery
Urgent implementation of these projects is required to meet policy targets and ensure Irish trading capability is not impacted. HMI members have already started work that will deliver on 2030 and 2035 targets.
“HMI members are a powerhouse of Irish industrial players, amongst the few able to deploy infrastructure at national scale. All HMI members need is the starting signal from Government – and any delay to that signal will push back our decarbonisation targets and risk losing the economic benefits achieved through an Irish hydrogen mobility ecosystem” – Jonathan Hogan, HMI Director
This paper is the second in a series of briefing papers from HMI on the urgent need for hydrogen mobility in Ireland. The final paper, ‘Policy Support Required in Ireland’, shows the policy and funding support that will enable the development of this roadmap and allow Irish projects to access millions in EU funding.
