Policy Support Required in Ireland
Supportive policy in Ireland could unlock millions in EU hydrogen funds
HMI’s third and final briefing paper finds that over €4bn of EU funding could be made available in 2025 alone for hydrogen mobility projects. However, Ireland has largely not been able to take advantage of this funding due to a lack of supportive national funding and policies.
The paper on policy support needed in Ireland shows where national policy and funding can complement EU funding to create a viable business case for Irish hydrogen mobility projects. HMI members believe the following measures would support the development of an Irish hydrogen mobility ecosystem:
- Implementing an Early Hydrogen Innovation Fund for demonstration projects
- Providing long-term clarity on funding and policy support mechanisms and levels
- Providing national support for hydrogen vehicles linked to HRS, and to retrofit vessels with ammonia / methanol-ready engines
- Providing opex support for renewable hydrogen and fuel production
In the long term, demand for hydrogen and renewable fuels in mobility is expected to be driven by:
- Implementation of a sustainable aviation fuel and renewable maritime fuel mandate
- Continued policy support subsidising the production of hydrogen for road transport
“The EU is providing large volumes of funding to enable hydrogen mobility projects, but Irish companies are currently cut off from this due to a lack of national support. Ireland can enable its industrial players to take advantage of European funding and unlock abundant renewable energy, Irish energy independence, economic benefits, and emissions reductions.” – Jonathan Hogan, HMI Director
This paper is the third and final paper in a series of briefings from HMI on the urgent need for hydrogen mobility in Ireland. The full series of briefing papers can be downloaded on the HMI website.
