The Need For and Vision Of Hydrogen Mobility in Ireland

Deploying hydrogen mobility in Ireland will bring hundreds of jobs, reduce transport carbon emissions, and increase energy security

New research from HMI shows that EU mandates requiring Ireland to use green hydrogen in the road, rail, aviation, and maritime sectors will not only support the development of 700MW of electrolysis capacity by 2035, but an ecosystem of renewable power and industries. The implementation of these mandates will:

  • Unlock over €6 billion in private investment
  • Bring 260,000 tonnes of emissions reductions per year.
  • Create 600 permanent new jobs, adding €128M in GVA per year to the Irish economy.
  • Contribute to sustaining HMI member companies’ existing jobs.
  • Increase energy security through on-island fuel production, displacing imported fossil fuels.
  • Reduce dispatch-down of renewable assets through long-term energy storage, allowing the full utilisation of Ireland’s renewables.

“Now is the time to implement the correct policies to create demand for hydrogen and e-fuels – bringing significant economic benefits and launching Ireland’s clean energy industry” – Des Phelan, HMI Chair

This paper is the first in a series of three papers from HMI on the urgent need for hydrogen mobility in Ireland. The next paper, ‘Collective Ambitions of HMI Members’, shows the roadmap of projects HMI members are willing and able to deliver to capitalise on these opportunities.
